Advocacy Dialogues: Engaging Policymakers on the Issues

Session Description:

Using MPHA Voting and Health work as context, we will discuss the importance of and methods for holding critical conversations with state and local policymakers to advance policies for the health of our democracy and communities. Attendees will gain knowledge and skills for conducting these visits in the context of Voting and Health, and hear stories of successful efforts from our partners at We Choose Us and the Washington County Democracy Team.

Objectives -

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the ways in which engaging with policymakers through advocacy dialogues can advance public health and equity.
  • Identify the approach and strategy used to conduct successful advocacy dialogues through “research visits.”
  • Apply this approach to a broad range of health policy issues.
  • Identify actionable steps to advancing health equity by promoting a healthy inclusive democracy.
Presenters: Catherine Harrison, RN, MPH; Gnora Mahs, MPH; Lilly Sasse; Washington County Democracy Team.
