Public Health Legislative Training Series

Why is it important for public health workers and healthcare professionals to understand Minnesota’s legislative process? Where are the opportunities for our input? How can we effectively make our voices heard by policymakers?

Join this nonpartisan lunchtime legislative training series to learn digestible, shareable, and actionable knowledge about our state’s legislative process. This series is co-hosted by the Minnesota Public Health Association, Minnesota Rural Health Association, and Minnesota Oral Health Coalition.

SESSION 1: Overview of the Legislative Training Series 
October 1, 2024

  • The structure of Minnesota state government
    • 3 branches of government and their roles
    • A brief explanation of state departments, agencies, and boards
  • Elections
    • Voter registration, districts, dates
    • House and Senate
    • Governor and other higher offices, Secretary of State, Attorney General, etc.
    • Appointments, Commissioners, and special elections

Presented by: Antonia Apolinário-Wilcoxon, Ed.D, immediate past president of MPHA and President/Founder of Equity Strategies.
